The trend of the MAR plate boundary changes gradually as it comes on-shore from the Reykjanes Ridge to the Reykjanes Peninsula.  On Reykjanes Peninsula, horizontal GPS vectors (black arrows; data from Hreinsdóttir et al., 2001) indicate that the plate boundary bends toward the southwest as it approaches the offshore portion of the ridge.

Structures  in the southwesternmost part of the Reykjanes Peninsula have a complexity not observed elsewhere to the east. The area is the black box is interpreted below. (Aerial photograph from Loftmyndir ehf.)
