Reykjanes Peninsula

Map of fractures with color symbology according to strike (red = 000°- 020°; yellow = 021°- 040°; green = 041°- 060°; blue = 061°- 080°; purple = >080°) , overlain on an aerial photomosaic of the Reykjanes Peninsula (aerial photo from Loftmyndir ehf. Bathymetric contoursfrom Icelandic Hydrographic Survey). In white is shown the plate boundary axis connecting the centers of volcanic fissure swarms (outlines redrawn from Jakobsson et al., 1978). Notice how the plate boundary axis bends gradually as it comes onshore where it is eventually oriented approximately 30° counterclockwise with respect to the direction of absolute plate motion (red arrows).

Fractures separated according to strike, using the color symbology above. Fractures within a specific strike range have a distinctive spatial distribution with respect to the volcanic fissure swarms.
